Vintage Dutch Monoprint - 2007

This is a large Dutch monoprint which has been framed behind glass.  On the back of the painting are the words (translated from the Dutch): 'Mono print, B Wildebrandt Studio: Begganden Autno, Expen 2007 - floral'.

A monoprint (or monotype) is a 'one of a kind' painting or drawing which has been transferred from a flat surface to paper.  Unlike traditional printmaking that makes exact duplicates, a monoprint can never be perfectly replicated.  The process is highly painterly, blending printmaking, drawing and painting techniques.  There are two methods: the Light-Field and Dark-Field methods.  One is where the artist paints or rolls ink onto a smooth plate (such as glass) and then presses paper onto the plate (Light-Field) or alternatively the whole plate is covered in ink and the artist removes ink using rags, brushs or cotton swabs (Dark-Field).   

I would suggest that the light-field technique has been used in this instance as you can see particularly at the bottom right of the print where glass has been removed from wet paint which gives the textured effect.
