An antique French yellow glazed earthenware terrine with lug handles. Potters in Alsace & Burgundy crafted heavy earthenware vessels such as this for baking and preserving. They were coated with a durable lead-based yellow glaze which made the terrecotta base impermeable to liquids during the 19th & 20th centuries to cook slow meats, stews and layered vegetables in wood-fired ovens. It is suggested that this terrine dates from 1900 - 1930.
Although originally designed for cooking, I would suggest that this would make a fabulous jardiniere for use in the house, conservatory or garden.
